Soloist Ellie McLay plays first cello in the Sinfonia. She studied music at the University of Huddersfield, and subsequently at the University of Edinburgh. She is now an instrumental tutor in Leicester and Leicestershire.
Ellie also plays cello with Leicester Symphony Orchestra.
Camille Saint-Saens' Cello Concerto no 1 is one of the most iconic pieces of the solo cello repertoire recorded by many virtuoso cellists. We are delighted to have Ellie playing the concerto with us.
In 1872 when Saint-Saens composed the work, he was involved in a campaign to promote French rather than German music, after the Franco - Prussian War. It is perhaps rather ironic that we are coupling the concerto with two pieces by Beethoven - surely Saint-Saens would not have approved!
Beethoven's Symphony no 4 is not one of his more famous works, being overshadowed by the 3rd (Eroica) and the 5th. Written in 1807, it is described as sunny and cheerful, reminiscent of the symphonies of Haydn.
