Louis Spohr lived from 1784 - 1859, so was more or less contemporary with Beethoven and indeed Mendelssohn (1809 - 1847), with whom he shares this programme.
The Grand Nonetto is an unusual piece, scored for wind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon) and four strings (violin, viola, cello and double bass). Although his work is little known today, he composed eight symphonies, ten operas and numerous chamber works.
Felix Mendelssohn wrote his Scottish Symphony over an extended period after several visits to Scotland around 1829 -31, visits which also inspired the Hebrides Overture.
